In November 2014, approximately 7,200 teachers were given an extension to their conditional registration expiry date to 31 December 2015 by the Teaching Council. This date was subsequently extended by 1 month to 31 January 2016. The Teaching Council have undertaken an extensive post, email and SMS campaign to directly contact the teachers in this cohort.

As it stands, thre are still 190 teachers at post primary level who need to submit evidence that they have fulfilled their condition or requested an extension.

If registration lapses, teachers are not eligible to be paid from state funds and it not possible to receive retrospective payment for periods of non-registration. Re-registration, determined by the legislation, requires the teacher to go through initial registration process and is not simply a re-activation of their registration. This is further complicated by the fact that they have lapsed due to non-compliance with their conditional registration and will involve Panels reviewing the applications.

It is therefore vitally important that teachers concerned immediately contact the Teaching Council. It is much easier to work out their options before the 31 January 2016. The Council can be contacted on conditions@teachingcouncil.ie or calling 01 6517900 / local 1890 224 224
