Quotas won't tackle recruitment and retention issue

Second-level schools nationwide are struggling to recruit teachers across a range of subjects, the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) said today. The union has expressed its scepticism about the proposal to introduce quotas for teacher training places – as reported in today’s Irish Times. While it and other measures may merit consideration, it will do nothing to tackle the current crisis.

TUI members around country demand end to pay discrimination

Members of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) are today staging lunchtime protests around the country over the continuing injustice of pay discrimination. Service to students is not affected by the protests, which are taking place outside the schools, colleges, centres and Institutes of Technology in which TUI members work. Teachers and lecturers who entered the profession since 2011 are still paid at a lower rate than their colleagues for carrying out the same work.

'46% of new entrants to not see themselves in profession in ten years' time' - new TUI survey highlights damage of pay discrimination

Almost half of recent entrants to post-primary teaching believe it is unlikely or very unlikely that they will still be in the profession in ten years’ time, according to the findings of a new survey by the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI). However, if pay equality was restored, 94% said it was likely or very likely that they would remain in the profession.
