Teacher unions condemn failure to protect staff in early pregnancy

School staff in early pregnancy and certain cohorts of immune compromised members are not currently eligible for vaccination. With increasing concern in respect of very high rates of community infection and growing unease about the transmissibility of the delta variant being central to regular public health messages from NPHET, we are alarmed that this small cohort of the school workforce is being sent back to school settings prematurely, prior to getting the opportunity to achieve significant vaccine protection.

Latest update from FET Stakeholders group

Discussions focused on the return of FET services and planning for significant on-site activity for September.  The planned return of FET provision will continue in accordance with current Governmental COVID-19 Resilience & Recovery 2021 – The Path Ahead framework and based on full adherence to the current national guidelines and health and safety regulations.

Changes to vaccination rollout programme

TUI notes today’s announcement of changes to the national vaccination rollout programme. Specifically, from next Monday, 5th July, individuals aged between 18 and 34 can begin to access the Johnson and Johnson vaccine in pharmacies, while in addition, from Friday, 9th July, those aged between 30 and 34 can begin to register at Vaccine.hse.ie for an mRNA vaccine.  Together with our sister unions the INTO and the ASTI, TUI wrote last week to the Taoiseach, Minister Foley, Minister Donnelly, NPHET, NIAC and the HSE to emphasise the need for school staff to be vaccinated as a matter of urgency. TUI welcomes confirmation of greater choice in 2022 State examinations

The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) has welcomed the confirmation that there will be adjustments which will incorporate additional choice for the Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate examinations in 2022. The union has called for full details on the changes to issue in the coming weeks so that students and teachers know where they stand ahead of the school year.
