Teaching Council Elections

(26 Nov 2008)
In accordance with the recently published schedule from the Teaching Council elections are due to take place in the near future.  These details have already been published in the national newspapers and registered teachers have also been advised. Details are also on the Teaching Council website www.teachingcouncil.ie.

In accordance with previous practice, TUI will be seeking to endorse a candidate in three of the constituencies open to post-primary teachers.   The three constituencies are as follows:

Post-Primary VEC

  • Connaught / Munster / Ulster – one seat
  • Leinster – one seat

Post-Primary Community and Comprehensive

  • Connaught / Leinster / Munster / Ulster – one seat

Nominations are sought from branches for these three constituencies.   In order to nominate a member for a particular constituency, the branch and the member must be in that constituency.   Therefore, any VEC branch in Connaught, Munster or Ulster may nominate in respect of that constituency.   Any VEC branch in Leinster may nominate in respect of that constituency and any branch in the country representing C&C school(s) may nominate for the C&C constituency.

Branches may nominate a member of the branch and in addition may nominate members for the constituency from other branches.

Nominations in writing must reach the undersigned by Wednesday, 17th December, 2008, at 5.00 p.m.

The electoral process, in order to determine the candidate to be backed by TUI, will be as follows:

  • All valid nominations received by the due date will be issued to all branches within the constituency in question. This will be done by posting the names on the TUI website as soon after 5pm on the 17th December as possible and by letter to branches immediately thereafter.
  •  Each branch in a constituency will be asked to vote for one candidate in their constituency and to indicate such preference to this office by Friday, 9th January, 2009, at 5.00p.m.
  • To take account of the differing sizes of branches, the vote of each branch will be counted as the number of delegates to which they are entitled to send to Congress.   Thus branches will have their votes counted on the following basis:

Members

Delegates

Members

Delegates

1 - 30

1

91 - 120

4

31 - 60

2

121 - 150

5

61 - 90

3

151 - 180

and so on.

Once a candidate is identified by this process, which has been agreed by the Executive Committee, that candidate and only that candidate will receive the full support of TUI as necessary and all TUI members will be encouraged to vote for that candidate and only for that candidate.
