money should be used to aid those affected by flooding – TUI
(23 Dec 2009)
The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) has called on the Government to utilise the money saved by the strike day taken by members in November to assist those worst affected by the recent flooding.
Speaking today, TUI General Secretary Peter MacMenamin said:
“TUI will be sending correspondence to the Department of Education and Science seeking that money taken out of the pay packets of TUI members as a result of the strike action on November 24th be used to assist those worst affected by the flooding that recently devastated many communities around the country.
The Dublin Community and Comprehensive Schools branch of the TUI brought forward a proposal to the last TUI Executive Committee meeting which was unanimously adopted.
There is an unprecedented level of anger among members over pay cuts and damage done to the education system as a result of the cutbacks. In addition to this, 1,000 teachers have lost their jobs at second level over the last twelve months.
The strike on November 24th was a clear signal to Government of the feeling among members. Now they want to see the money deducted from salary benefitting those worst affected around the country by the recent flooding. The money could be given to the Red Cross for distribution to the worst cases as they see fit.”
